Chess was once different then it is today. One of the relatively new rules is that pawns can move two spaces on their first move.
Once this new rule was placed, people started to argue because if a pawn moved two spaces then if their pawn was in a place to kill if the opponents pawn moved one space. Then, a new rule was introduced called en passant.
En passant is when you kill a pawn which is next to your pawn. If your pawn is in a position o be killed when it was on one space, then if it moves two spaces the opponent can kill your pawn.
